GTP — the backbone of mobile data

Card 1 of 520%

The Tunnel That Carries Every Mobile Packet

The GPRS Tunneling Protocol has been the workhorse of mobile data transport since the 3G era and remains essential in 5G networks today. GTP creates logical tunnels between network nodes by encapsulating your original IP packets inside a new GTP header and an outer IP header, allowing user data to traverse the core network independently of the underlying routing infrastructure. This tunneling approach is what makes seamless mobility possible, because when you move between cell towers, the network simply updates the tunnel endpoint rather than interrupting your data session or changing your assigned IP address.
