The IMT-2020 Performance Framework
IMT-2020, published as ITU-R Recommendation M.2083, is the international framework that defines what a technology must achieve to qualify as a true 5G system. It establishes eight key performance indicators spanning throughput, latency, density, mobility, and efficiency. Any candidate radio interface technology submitted to the ITU must demonstrate compliance against these quantitative targets through evaluation by independent groups. The framework ensures that marketing claims of "5G" are backed by verifiable engineering benchmarks rather than brand positioning alone, giving regulators and operators a common yardstick for technology comparison.
